Removing Streaks From An Airbrush Tan

It’s easy to make a client with skin that’s been well prepared for airbrush tanning look beautiful. But what do you do when someone comes to you who’s accidentally streaked a good tan through sweating or been the recipient of bad spray-on bronzing?

Helping a client with this kind of problem is easier than you think. Best of all, it can be done safely, naturally and at home.

STEP 1: Shower/take a bath with a washcloth

Tell the client to take a warm shower or bath. Once in the water, rub small circles on the streaked area(s) with a soapy washcloth. As the heat from the water breaks down the tanning solution ingredients, friction from the washcloth exfoliates the top streaky layer from skin.

STEP 2: Apply water-diluted vinegar to skin

Once the streaked area has been exfoliated, the next thing to do is begin smoothing the streaky area into the rest of the tan. A client can do this by gently applying some water-diluted vinegar to the affected area and blending in the remaining color.

STEP 3: Finish with an alpha hydroxy lotion

Alpha hydroxy (AHA) acids are a group of natural acids found in foods like milk, apples and citrus fruits. Applying a lotion to skin that contains AHA will help to continue the blending process begun with the water-diluted vinegar.

If this treatment yields an overall effect that is too faded for the client, he or she can opt to continue the fade process until the old tan is completely removed. That person will then be able to start from scratch a little wiser about how to care for their tan and/or who to trust to create the most flattering bronze possible.
