How to lighten a spray tan

Not all the people you work with will look good with a deep, dark tan. Fair-skinned clients, for example, typically look much better with a lighter, more golden color.

At some point, you may encounter individuals who will absolutely insist on going darker than should otherwise be the case. Only after they go home and take a closer look at themselves will they realize the mistake they’ve made.

You can suggest the following technique to clients who ask how they can lighten too-dark tans to a shade that is more compatible with their skin type:

Step #1

Add one cup of baking soda to a tub of warm water and soak skin for at least half an hour.

Our Sea Salt Scrub can help lighten spray tans.

Step #2

Rub body with an exfoliating body wash like New Gorgeous’ Sea Salt Scrub. It may help to also use a washcloth or loofah during this process.

Step #3

Get out of the tub, dry off and check to see whether the spray tan has begun to fade. It should be at least one to two shades lighter.

Step #4

If the tan needs more lightening, cut a lemon in half and rub over skin, especially those areas that appear noticeably darker (for example, knees and elbows). The natural bleaching agents in lemons should even out any remaining problem areas.

Step #5

The client can also use a body lotion that contains alpha hydroxy acids, which increase the rate at which skin cells slough off. He or she should use the lotion at least once daily or until the tan has lightened to a more suitable shade.

No matter how good your spray tan solution, the tan that ultimately emerges may not be suitable for the person wearing it. That’s why you need to be prepared.
