Human skin is the largest organ of the human body. And like any other organ, it is susceptible to both injury and disease. The sun–or any form of UV radiation–is just one of the things that can damage skin.
The skin of an average person weighs anywhere from eight to ten pounds and covers an area of approximately 22 square feet. The subcutaneous layer – This is the deepest layer of the skin. It provides insulation and food reserves, contains large blood vessels and nerves, and attaches the skin and body.
The dermal layer – This is the middle layer of skin. It contains small blood vessels and nerve endings as well as collagen, a substance that gives skin strength, durability and elasticity.
The epidermis – This is the outermost layer of skin. Its job is to fight off organisms trying to invade the body and is where the entire tanning process takes place.
When the skin is exposed to UV radiation, melanocytes, which are the pigment cells involved in the tanning process, produce extra melanin which darkens the epidermal layer and protects the rest of the skin from further damage. Individuals with fair complexions have difficulty producing this substance and so, more often than not, end up with painful sunburns. Regardless of a person’s skin type, however, UV radiation can also eventually damage skin cell DNA, even for people who have naturally darker skin.
