Spray tanning safety

Spray tanning enhances personal appearance like nothing else. It adds a beautiful, healthy glow to skin without risking UV radiation damage. At the same time, though, both you and your clients need to take precautions in order to ensure the best possible experience for everyone.

Educate your first-time clients

When you meet with a new client, be sure to explain not only what they can expect during a session, but also how sunless tanning itself works. Tell them that people with a history of sensitive skin may experience skin rashes or contact dermatitis from the moment they get spray tanned to the day the color fades from their skin.

Inform them, too, about the need to use moisturizer or sun block made with SPF 30 or higher. A spray tan does not automatically protect skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays.

When in doubt, do a test spray

The best way to avoid potential problems is to spray a small patch of skin (for example, on the arm or leg) with spray tan solution. Using gentle, all-natural products, like the kind New Gorgeous makes, can be especially helpful. Fewer chemicals mean a lessened likelihood of negative skin reactions.

Ask about respiratory health

Even if someone does not have skin sensitivities, he or she may still have other issues, such as asthma, emphysema or other lung diseases, that will necessitate exercising caution. Be sure to conduct all spray tan sessions in a well-ventilated area and apply the tan in short bursts. Also ask at-risk clients to wear nose clips and avoid breathing through the mouth.

Beware of mucous membranes

The FDA has approved spray tan products containing dihydroxyacetone (DHA) for external use only. That means that you should never allow sunless tanning solution to come into contact with sensitive body parts (like the eyes, lips or genitals) that contain mucous membranes. Have all clients close their eyes and/or wear eye protection. Also make sure they wear at minimum a thong.
