Demystifying Spray Tans

New clients who come to you may not know much about spray tanning except that it’s better than UV methods of bronzing. That’s why it’s good to give them some basic information how airbrush tanning can make skin go from bland to gorgeous in about the time it takes to jump in and out of the shower.

Skin basics

Skin, which actually the biggest organ in the human body, is comprised of two main layers: the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis is the top layer of the skin and is the part that is most affected by tanning processes initiated by UV methods, sprays or lotions. The epidermis is itself divided into layers. The stratum basale is the deepest layer and also the one affected by UV radiation. The stratum corneum is the top layer of the epidermis and the one most affected by spray tans.

DHA: the magic ingredient

The active ingredient in spray tan solutions is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is derived from sugar. Dead skin cells cover skin surface: when DHA interacts with these cells (specifically the protein in them), a chemical reaction occurs that causes skin cells to change color and mimic the look of a natural tan.

Spray tan application

The best airbrush tans are the ones that get hand-applied by a trained professional. This ensures that the layers of tanning solution are even and that all parts of the body, especially difficult areas like the hands, feet, elbows and knees, receive the attention they need. A skilled technician can even contour the body around the chest and abdomen or around especially well-developed muscles.

The post-tan process

As skin sheds dead cells, the tan fades. Exposure to spray tan-unfriendly elements, such as skin astringents or pool water, can dramatically increase fade rate. Clients can slow the process by moisturizing skin on a daily basis. With proper care, a good quality tan can last anywhere between 10 to 14 days.
