Using sunblock with a spray tan.

The main reason people want to get spray tanned is so that they can bypass sunbathing and all its harmful effects. Unfortunately, though, too many individuals believe that just because they have an airbrush tan, they are somehow protected from UV radiation. The truth is, they are not.

After clients receive a spray tan, they must use sunblock, especially if they have fair skin. Otherwise, their skin will burn and peel. And if that happens, their spray tan will be ruined.

But here’s the kicker: they can’t use just any sunblock. They have to make sure that the sunscreen they use is oil-free. And that’s because oils will destroy a spray tan just a surely as a sunburn will.

Tell your clients to look for sunblock that is is DHA-friendly and has a moderate sun protection factor (SPF) rating. Dermatologists recommend SPF 30. This offers about 97% protection against the sun’s UVB rays. Higher SPFs don’t offer much more protection. What’s more, a sunscreen with a high SPF may actually harm your spray tan.

Sunblocks will typically also moisturize skin, which is important. Moisturizing helps prevent premature aging while helping to extend the life a spray tan. When your clients are not outdoors, you could recommend they use products like NG’s Anti-Aging Moisture Lock, which helps to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.

You should also advise your clients to stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, especially during the summer. Typically, is usually between the hours of 10AM and 4PM. They should also cover those parts of their bodies that are the most prone to burning.
