How to spray tan the feet, hands, elbows and knees.

Are you a great spray tan professional – or just average? Spray tanning hands and feet as well as elbows and knees are challenges.

One of the marks of an exceptional technician is how well he or she deals with these parts of the body. The skin covering these areas is some of the driest, thickest, roughest and/or most wrinkled on the body, which makes for difficult tanning. And if a technician accidentally applies solution to the underside of hands and feet or onto the cuticles of fingernails and toenails, it can result in an unnatural look.

Here are some tips to help you create the most flattering effects for your clients:

1. Recommend careful exfoliation

Clients need to get rid of the dead skin that accumulates on their bodies. Tell them to pay especial attention to their elbows and knees and to the joint areas of their hands and feet. New Gorgeous’s Sea Salt Scrub can work wonders on all of these problem zones.

2. Get clients to use barrier cream

Just before you spray your clients, make sure that they apply barrier cream on the palms of their hands and the soles of their feet. Also ask them to put it on their cuticles and nails. When used in the proper amounts, our specially formulated Barrier Cream can block DHA absorption (on palms and soles) or permit less tanning solution to get to areas of skin (elbows and knees) that would otherwise get too dark.

3. Demonstrate proper positioning for hands and feet

Tell your clients to bend their hands into claws and to spread their toes as wide apart as they can. Doing so will help stretch the folds of skin around the hand joints and keep newly coated toes from touching each other.
