Most of your spray tanning customers are likely everyday people who want to look good. At some point, though, you may get a request for work from a more particular kind of client: the bodybuilder.
Like the good professional you are, you typically match clients’ skin tones to the solution that works best on them. This means that you’ll be more likely to recommend that someone with light skin use a tanning solution that leaves skin gold rather than bronze-colored. But this rule doesn’t apply to bodybuilders. No matter how fair-skinned these clients are, the darker the spray tan, the better.
Spray tan solutions contain a naturally-occurring ingredients called dihydroxyacetone or DHA. This is the substance that makes skin go darker gradually, just as occurs in a real suntan. The DHA levels in spray tan solutions range between 5 and 12%.
When you airbrush tan a very fair-skinned regular client, you normally use a solution that’s on the low end of the DHA scale (usually 5 or 6%). For everyone else, that level usually between 8 and 10%. But for bodybuilders, the level needs to be 12% or more. And some spray tan professionals use solutions that have 20% or more DHA.
Bodybuilders need dark tans because that kind of deep bronzing makes muscle definition more pronounced under the bright lights of the stage where they display themselves for judging. And sometimes, it’s the quality of the tan that can make the difference between winning and losing a contest. Skin that isn’t dark enough may make it difficult for judges to see muscle separation and cause a bodybuilder to lose points.
